Choosing the right texture resolution is one of the most common questions for 3D artists. Too low and the texture looks blurry. Too high and you waste VRAM.
Texture Resolution Guide: What Size Do You Actually Need in 2026?
Français
Common Resolutions
Textures follow power-of-two sizes: 512x512 1024x1024 (1K) 2048x2048 (2K) 4096x4096 (4K) and 8192x8192 (8K). GPUs handle these sizes most efficiently.
Matching Resolution to Use Case
For mobile and VR use 512 to 1K. For PC games 2K is standard with 4K for hero assets. For offline rendering 4K to 8K is common.
Texel Density
What actually matters is texel density: how many texture pixels cover each unit of 3D space. Consistent texel density prevents some surfaces looking sharp while others look blurry.
VRAM Budget
A single 4K texture with all PBR maps uses roughly 85MB of uncompressed VRAM. Use texture streaming LOD systems and compressed formats like BCn or ASTC to manage memory.
